Staying at a château in South of France has always been one of those things I had always wanted to do. When I had discovered Château Saint Martin, it was love at first sight and I knew I could not rest if I had not booked a few nights there. What was once a Knights Templar fortress in the 12th century is now a prestigious five-star guest property.
Situated in Vence, it was only 15-25 minutes drive from Monaco and Nice. It is perched over a cliff overlooking the exquisite views across the Cote d’Azur where the endless bed of green meets with the deep blue sky. From your terrace, if you are lucky, you could espy the breathtaking views of the azure waters of the Mediterranean sea. Time very much stands still at this beautiful château, surrounded by 300-year-old olive groves that are accompanied with a generous spread of lavender and roses. If I could describe Château Saint Martin in one word, it would be enchanting.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with the most luscious garden and the historical ruins of a 12th century castle guard at the gate entrance. We were then given a very warm welcome, whilst, luxuriating in the beautiful décor at the lobby – furnished with a regal splendour. What caught my eye was particularly the Aubusson 200-year-old tapestries in the bar area that hung majestically on the wall.
The Hotel
Staying at the Château Saint Martin has been an incredible stay. Despite being only a stone’s throw away from the busy coast of the riviera, every inch of the hotel emanates calmness and tranquility. You could laze around at the pool whilst relishing the view or just take a stroll around the hotel ground. Either way, you would not be disappointed.
If you have some time, you too could enjoy your spa day at the La Prairie where they offer their signature caviar massages.
The Suite
The suite itself is very Provencal. I would totally recommend getting the suite with the terrace for the verdant views of the olive groves and the coast beyond. Waking up to such view and seeing how the colours of the sky gradually begins to fade from the terrace was one of the highlights of our stay. The suite itself was indeed very spacious that is adorned with classic Louis XV- and XVI-style furnishings.
Nearby
The medieval town, Saint-Paul de Vence is only a short drive away from the hotel ground and it is truly a must visit if you ever find yourself in Côte D’azur. A true haven for artists including Pablo Picasso, Matisse and Marc Chagall. In fact, Chagall was even buried at the cemetery there alongside some other renowned artists.
